Questions

What is the Phone Bad Plan?

The Phone Bad Plan is a 7-step plan to make your phone radically less addictive without making it less useful. It takes 15-30 minutes to do.

How does it work?

The core problem you have is that your phone is Phone Good. It's so incredibly Phone Good it's making Life Bad.

The Phone Bad Plan walks you through how to make your phone Phone Bad instead of Phone Good. It becomes suddenly and radically less fun to waste time with. The result is slashed screen time, increased focus, better relationships. Or said simply: Life Good.

How do I know if this is right for me?

If you're not sure if you have a problem you can take this 3 minute screener or you can just experiment with the plan for a week and see what happens.

Are phones really bad for us?

Truthfully, the evidence is mixed. It seems like for some people phones aren't a big deal. But for the people who need the Phone Bad Plan (including its author!) they are a big challenge. For those people, having Phone Good consistently disconnects them from what matters, makes daily life harder, and turns them into worse versions of themselves.

Why not just buy a dumb phone?

The problem with dumb phones is that they rarely work with the broad range of things we actually need our phones to be able to do in the modern world. Even when they have bare-bones solutions for apps which aren't a problem - like maps, music or audiobooks - they rarely integrate with small apps - a school or daycare app, or a QR code you need to use to order food from the robot waiter.

The goal of the Phone Bad plan is eliminate disruptive and problematic elements of phone use, not get rid of modern living.

Will I lose access to my social media accounts?

No! The Phone Bad Plan isn't about removing social media entirely. It's about getting it off of our phones so that problematic use declines. The plan walks you through ensuring access on a separate device.

Does this need to be forever?

No! The Phone Bad Plan can be done as a short-term experiment or reset. Many people find that this improves their relationship with their phone even if they allow previously problematic apps back on. However, some people notice the trouble starts again; for them, we recommend planning on doing the plan indefinitely.

Do I need to do this all at once or can I do this in bits and pieces?

This plan is designed to be done all at once. This will help you make a sharp break with your relationship to your phone.
